Sergio Gor, a close aide of US President Donald Trump and nominee for the post of US Ambassador to India, is set to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday for his confirmation hearing. If approved, the 38-year-old will become the youngest American envoy to New Delhi.
The ambassadorial position in India has been vacant since January, raising concerns about a diplomatic gap between the two nations.
India’s envoy to the US, Vinay Kwatra, endorsed Gor’s nomination, describing it as “a sign of the importance and priority of India-US ties, and a commitment to strengthen the bridges and deepen the bonds of friendship between our two countries.”
Backing from Washington’s policy circles has also been strong. The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) wrote to the Senate panel, highlighting Gor’s credentials and stressing the urgency of filling the long-vacant post. “We believe Mr. Gor’s appointment is critical to reinvigorating US engagement with India and advancing our nations’ shared interests,” the forum stated.
USISPF President Mukesh Aghi said that Gor’s confirmation would “help deepen cooperation and reaffirm America’s commitment to this partnership.” The forum also noted Gor’s dual designation as both Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, which signals Washington’s intent to pursue a broader regional strategy.
Trump formally announced Gor’s nomination in August, praising his contributions as Director of Presidential Personnel. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote: “I am pleased to announce that I am promoting Sergio Gor to be our next United States Ambassador to the Republic of India, and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Sergio and his team have hired nearly 4,000 America First Patriots across every Department of our Federal Government in RECORD time.”
Calling him a “great friend,” Trump said he has complete trust in Gor, who will continue serving in his White House role until confirmation.
